A small plane crash in the Cedar Valley area of Utah County has left a pilot dead.

The Utah County Sheriff’s Office identified the victim as 49-year-old Larry Irwin Kellogg of Springville.

Deputies with the Utah County Sheriff’s Office were called out to a remote area near Homansville Pass Road just after 6 p.m. on Sunday after a passerby noticed the wreckage and contacted authorities.

Sgt. Spencer Cannon said it’s unclear when the small plane initially went down and how long it had been there.

“We don’t have any witnesses who saw the crash, so there’s not a lot to tell there,” Cannon said.

The small blue-and-white plane was found in an open field in Homansville Canyon just north of Eureka. Kellogg was the only occupant of the small plane.

“We know that he took off from Spanish Fork and flew out into the Cedar Valley area where he ultimately crashed. We don’t know a lot about what his intentions were, if he was just practicing or what,” Cannon told the Daily Herald.

The sheriff’s office and National Transportation Safety Board will conduct an investigation to determine a cause for the crash, but they’re hoping for some help from anyone in the county who may have seen what happened.

Those who have any information are encouraged to contact the Utah County Sheriff’s Office.
