Sgt. Ray Ormond of the Utah County Sheriff’s Office said a sailboat with two on board capsized on the north end of the lake just before 6 p.m., prompting rescue crews from multiple Utah County agencies to conduct search efforts.

“We launched rescuers from Saratoga Springs Marina, American Fork, Lindon and even the Provo boat harbor to go out and locate them,” Ormond said.

The two boaters were located on the lake after clinging to their watercraft for about 40 minutes and taken back to shore. Neither was seriously injured, according to Ormond.

Large waves from the windy conditions on the lake were said to be a factor in the boat turning upside down.

One of the men rescued described to KUTV how quickly the conditions changed while he and a friend were out sailing on the lake and recalled suddenly trying to stay afloat on the water as their boat began to sink beneath them.

The men also said they lost many of their belongings, including their boat, during the incident, but they managed to hang on to their cellphones.

As crews were responding to the capsized boat, Ormond said another call came in about a jet skier who had not returned to the American Fork Boat Harbor.

“Our guys were already on the lake looking for the other boaters about the same time frame that that one came in,” he told the Daily Herald.

Crews were able to rescue that person as well and get them back to the boat harbor.

Ormond advised people who are planning to recreate on Utah Lake to be prepared for varying weather situations and to wear a life jacket.

“You just really have to pay attention to the weather,” he said. “When it gets windy in Utah County, the waves on the lake can become very treacherous and dangerous very quickly. So just check the weather before you go, and if there’s a wind advisory, maybe go boating on a different day.”
