Spanish Fork Police BadgeA stabbing incident that injured a 17-year-old boy outside Maple Mountain High School on Saturday was the result of an altercation between two kids at a homecoming dance, according to Spanish Fork police.
Spanish Fork Police Lt. Cory Slaymaker said Monday that the homecoming dance was taking place outside the school in the parking lot when two students “ended up bumping into each other” and the altercation occurred.
“One of the kids pulled out a knife and stabbed the other kid,” Slaymaker told the Daily Herald.
Police said the 17-year-old was stabbed in the leg and taken to the hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening. The alleged assailant, a 16-year-old, was held at the Canyon Detention Center on suspicion of aggravated assault, according to police.
There was some speculation online that multiple people were stabbed, but Slaymaker reaffirmed the police’s initial report that just one student was targeted.
“That’s the problem with social media is everybody’s throwing stuff out there,” Slaymaker said. “There’s one victim and that’s all there is.”
Slaymaker said police work with the school districts on providing security at events. He said student resource officers are at school everyday but do not attend every school activity.
“They coordinate with the administration to attend what activities the administration feels like they need to be at,” he said.
A Nebo School District spokesperson did not respond to a request for comment.
