Utah County Republican Party delegates convened Saturday for a convention to decide candidate nominations for county positions and state legislative races within county lines.
Per party rules, candidates who garnered 60% of the final vote became the party’s outright nominee for the primary election on June 23. In races where the threshold was not met, the top two candidates qualified. A handful of candidates did not secure the party’s nomination but reached the ballot via signature gathering.
The 1,322 delegates attending the daylong event at Skyridge High School in Lehi whittled down their nominees for two open County Commission seats through three rounds of voting. Emerging from a six-person race for the Seat A nomination was Springville’s Brent Bowles with 758 votes (64.67%) to runner-up Michelle Kaufusi’s 414 votes (35.32%). Bowles, an anesthesiologist, will be the party’s nominee in the primary against Kaufusi, Provo’s former mayor who reached the ballot via signature gathering.
The seven-person Seat B race saw former Orem City Council member David Spencer (621 votes, 52.05%) and Carolina Herrin, legislative affairs director for the Utah Department of Corrections, (572 votes, 47.95%) each advance to the primary. Former Provo Deputy Mayor Isaac Paxman also advanced via the signature-gathering process.
In the county clerk race, incumbent Aaron Davidson received 747 votes (58.63%) to challenger Corey Astill’s 363 votes (41.36%). Davidson and Astill, who also qualified via signature gathering, will compete in the June primary.

The convention also held breakout sessions for state House and Senate races, with most incumbents receiving the endorsement.
In Senate District 21, incumbent Brady Brammer won the nomination with 191 votes (68.22%) to Kelly Smith’s 89 votes (31.78%).
Incumbent Cory Maloy defeated Charlie Tautaa in the House District 52 race with 84 votes to 13 votes. In House District 62, incumbent Norm Thurston had 54 votes to Jonah Johnson’s 8 votes.
House District 64 saw Jackie Larson defeat Matthew Durrant with 60 votes (62.5%) to 36 votes (37.5%). Incumbent Jefferson Burton announced last month he was dropping his reelection bid due to a move from the district.
