The man was identified in a family fundraiser as Chase Day. Also on board was a female passenger, who sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital, according to the Utah County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities said first responders were notified of the crash at 4 p.m. Friday and that the plane had just taken off from the nearby Provo Airport.

“Thankfully the pilot was able to put the aircraft down in shallower water, which did aid in the rescue/recovery efforts,” the sheriff’s office said in a news release.

The National Transportation Safety Board will be conducting an investigation into what caused the crash, and the Utah State Medical Examiner’s Office is also conducting an investigation, the sheriff’s office said.

A GoFundMe organized by Ryan Bunker said Day had recently earned his private pilot’s license and had a dream of becoming a commercial pilot.

“He was a loving son, brother, uncle, and friend to so many, and he brought passion and heart to everything he did,” Bunker said. “His loss has left his family and everyone who knew him devastated.”

The fundraiser was launched to help pay for funeral expenses and the cost of Day’s flight school, the GoFundMe said.

“During a time of overwhelming grief, Ryan hopes this support can give the family a little breathing room and allow them to focus on mourning and remembering Chase,” Bunker said.
