On Sunday afternoon, the Big Mountain Fire started in the mountains five miles southwest of Elberta. It was estimated to be as large as 400 acres but was reduced to 169.9 acres Monday. 

On Sunday evening, the Loafer Mountain Fire began in a remote area of Spanish Fork Canyon, south of Highway 89, and had burned 3.5 acres by Monday.

Neither fire appears at risk of significantly more growth.

Ground and air resources responded to the Big Mountain Fire on Sunday and managed to stop its progression, according to a BLM spokesperson. He said some moisture helped slow the fire and that the heat map did not show any heat. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time. 

Smokejumpers arrived Sunday night to combat the Loafer Mountain Fire and began building a containment line around the fire’s perimeter, according to Utah Fire Info. Crews remained on site overnight.
