The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced leadership changes Thursday following the death of President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles President Jeffrey R Holland on Dec. 27.

The longest tenured apostle, President Henry B. Eyring, becomes president of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles president. However, Dieter F. Uchtdorf, 85, the second-longest tenured apostle, was appointed the acting president of the quorum due to Eyring’s position in the First Presidency, the church said.

Uchtdorf was set apart by Church President Dallin H. Oaks Thursday.

“The Quorum of the Twelve Apostles is the second-highest presiding body in the government of the Church,” a church news release said. “In addition to their primary responsibility as special witnesses of the name of Christ throughout the world, these Apostles have significant administrative responsibilities for overseeing the operation and development of a global Church.”
