An Orem man faces an attempted murder charge after he allegedly told his mother there was “something odd about her aura” before stabbing her in the neck with a knife.

Dorian Malachi Mecham, 23, was charged Tuesday in Provo’s 4th District Court with attempted murder, a first-degree felony, for the alleged attack.

According to court documents, Mecham attacked his mother with a full-tang fixed-blade knife on July 11 in Springville. Mecham’s father responded by grabbing him, tackling him and taking the knife away, according to authorities.

Mecham fled the home in his parents’ car, ran a red light in Spanish Fork and hit another vehicle, then fled on foot and was located two blocks from the crash, court documents said.

Mecham’s mother was interviewed at the hospital and disclosed that he suffers from mental health issues and was walking around her room saying odd things prior to the attack, the arrest affidavit said.

Mecham was also charged with failure to comply with duties following a vehicle accident, a Class B misdemeanor; driving without a license, a Class C misdemeanor; and failure to stop or yield.

He is being held without bail in the Utah County Jail.

Starting at $4.32/week.
