Cars travel westward along a stretch of Pioneer Crossing in American Fork on Wednesday, April 9, 2025.The Utah Department of Transportation opened a new lane in each direction at Pioneer Crossing over the weekend, a move it says will increase traffic capacity by 50%.
The new lanes mark progress in a project to add flex lanes to the heavily trafficked 4.5-mile corridor connecting Interstate 15 in American Fork to Redwood Road in Saratoga Springs. Commuters will now have three lanes to use in each direction.
“If you’ve ever driven along Pioneer Crossing, you know how needed this project is,” UDOT Region 3 Director Rob Clayton said in a news release. “Opening these lanes will make a noticeable difference and provide a more reliable commute for the thousands of people who rely on this road every day.”
UDOT said the lanes opened two months ahead of schedule due to a dry winter and innovative construction approaches. Crews reused on-site materials and recycled concrete from Pioneer Crossing to expedite construction.
Work on flex lanes will continue through late 2026, UDOT said. Once completed, UDOT will be able to adjust the number of lanes in each direction to match daily traffic patterns. Drivers will have up to four lanes in peak directions, saving six minutes of daily travel time, according to UDOT.
