The decree ends stage 2 restrictions that the city was under throughout the summer, disallowing open flames anywhere in the city, including fire pits and charcoal grill.

Provo Deputy Fire Marshal Jeanie Atherton said the restrictions were lifted because storms occurring over the last few weeks has offered enough moisture to saturate the soil and vegetation. However, she warned the city isn’t “completely out of the woods.”

“It could still ignite if people build a fire in the wrong place under the wrong conditions, or it’s windy,” Atherton said. “It still could catch fire, but we’re in a position where we don’t need to have the strictest of strict restrictions anymore.” 

She called on residents to do their due diligence, build fires in a ring or an approved fire pit, and have water on hand to put fire out.
