Food & Care Coalition: Providing much more than meals

The Food and Care Coalition in Provo.

For many people, the Food & Care Coalition is known as a place where people can receive a meal. While that’s certainly true, a meal is often just the beginning of a much larger journey.

Every day, people walk through our doors carrying unique challenges and stories. Some come seeking a meal. Others need medical care, a shower, housing, counseling or simply someone willing to listen. No two journeys are the same, which is why no two paths forward look exactly alike.

The first step for anyone seeking additional services is a conversation. During an intake interview with our client services manager, we learn about each person’s circumstances, challenges and needs. This conversation helps us understand where someone is today and what support may help them move forward. We meet people where they are, providing support based on their individual circumstances, challenges and goals — all with dignity and respect.

For some, that next step may mean replacing lost identification documents, accessing medical or dental care that has been neglected for years, or connecting with mental health services. Others may need housing support, educational opportunities, employment resources or help overcoming barriers that have kept them from stability.

Every person is different. Every plan is different. The goal is the same: helping each person move from crisis toward lasting stability and independence.

For patrons accepted into our Transitional Housing Program, our case management team works alongside them to develop a personalized plan for moving forward. Together, they identify goals, recognize barriers and create solutions.

“We’re nudgers,” said Amanda, one of the coalition’s case managers. “Our job is to build a relationship with someone so they feel they can trust and rely on us for support.”

It might mean building a résumé, practicing interview skills, obtaining vital documents, finding permanent housing or coordinating care with community partners. But beyond the practical help, it means having someone who believes in them, encourages them and gently nudges them forward when the journey feels overwhelming.

The coalition’s approach is built on the belief that lasting change requires more than meeting an immediate need — it requires relationships, support and opportunities that help people move forward. A meal can provide nourishment for today, but a relationship, a plan and the right resources can help someone build a more stable tomorrow.

Lasting change doesn’t happen overnight. It happens one conversation, one goal, one opportunity and one step at a time. Sometimes, all it takes to begin that journey is walking through a door.

You can help open that door. Through donations, volunteer service and advocacy, you help provide the resources and relationships that allow people to move toward stability and hope.
