LDS church magazines will be offered in free subscriptions globally in 50 languages. On Tuesday, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced it will begin offering print subscriptions of its three global magazines at no cost in certain parts of the world. The magazines are currently published in 50 languages and distributed to millions of church members worldwide.
As of Aug. 1, anyone with a church account in certain parts of the world will be able to sign up for one annual subscription to one or more of the church’s magazines: the “Liahona” (for adults), “For the Strength of Youth” (for youth ages 12 to 18) and “Friend” (for children). The new subscription system will roll out to the rest of the world over the next several months.
“We come closer to Jesus Christ as we consistently participate in gospel study in the home,” Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf, of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, said in a news release. “The Church wants to give greater access to the words of the prophets, and we are excited to make the printed copies of the Church magazines available at no cost.”
Currently, households in the church’s North America West and Asia North areas will be able to subscribe to the church magazines of their choice at no cost. Households in the Church’s North America Central, North America Northeast, North America Southeast, North America Southwest and Utah areas will be able to subscribe beginning Feb. 1, 2024.
In recent years, church magazines have undergone significant changes to support members in their efforts to learn and live the gospel of Jesus Christ, and their content has been made more accessible to members worldwide. In 2021, the church began publishing its magazines for each age group in multiple languages; they are now available in 50 languages in both print and digital formats. Additional languages are available digitally.
“Liahona” highlights the teachings and ministry of church leaders, shares articles about applying gospel principles, supports learning the gospel at home and provides insight into scriptural topics.
“For the Strength of Youth” has spiritual messages from Apostles and other church leaders, testimonies and experiences from youth around the world, activities and seeks to help youth find joy as a disciple of Jesus Christ.
“Friend” invites children worldwide to follow Jesus Christ. Each issue contains scripture stories, child-friendly messages from prophets and other church leaders, game and stories of children throughout the world.
“Church magazines are a valuable resource for learning about the gospel of Jesus Christ and feeling a sense of belonging in His Church,” the First Presidency stated in a 2020 letter to Latter-day Saints worldwide. “Our desire is that members everywhere will subscribe and welcome this faith-sustaining influence into their hearts and homes.”
Subscribers will receive their first magazine six to eight weeks after subscribing. The ward council can subscribe for children and youth who do not have parents attending church with them, as well as for members who need additional help.
“As I read the stories from members from around the world, I love seeing how we are a global church, all building the kingdom of God together,” Relief Society General President Camille N. Johnson said in the news release. “It helps me feel closer to our brothers and sisters who may live very far away.”
