OREM — Three people are recovering from knife wounds as Orem police detectives try to determine a motive for a 24-year-old man’s alleged stabbing spree Monday.
Two men suffered significant injuries, both requiring surgery, and one was in critical condition for a time, according to police. The third victim, a woman, was taken to the hospital but was not seriously injured.
Police were not sure of a possible motive for the attack, which happened at about 5:25 p.m. in a home in the area of 1400 South and 700 East, Lt. Nick Thomas, Orem Police Department spokesperson, said Wednesday.
Wilton Vladimir Molina was booked into the Utah County Jail without bail on suspicion of three first-degree felony counts of attempted aggravated murder and a class B misdemeanor count of interfering with an officer.
In a probable cause statement, police said they went to the home in response to a reported stabbing and found the three victims, and Molina being held by one of the victims.
The female victim told police she and her husband rented a basement room to Molina. She said she was cooking when Molina appeared at the door and “just stared” at her. She then reported Molina went downstairs and she soon heard another man screaming “he’s stabbing me.”
She went to the top of the stairs and saw Molina charging at her with a knife, the arrest affidavit said. She retreated to the dining room and at that point her 12-year-old son ran outside to get help.
The woman said she continued retreating as Molina allegedly approached her with a knife raised. She said her husband, sleeping in the next room, awoke to her screaming and he started grappling with Molina.
The couple fought Molina, trying to disarm him, but Molina allegedly stabbed the man in a shoulder, a significant injury, and in the right bicep. The man also suffered severe lacerations on his hands.
Molina allegedly bit the man on the left calf and the woman on the right elbow. The woman also suffered lacerations on her left wrist and shin.
The husband got a wooden chair and subdued him with several blows to the head and neck, the arrest affidavit said.
The third victim, who the report said also was a downstairs renter, ran outside and collapsed on a neighboring lawn. Police said he suffered seven stab wounds in the abdomen, neck and left arm. Thomas said the man was in stable condition Wednesday, having been listed in critical condition and needing emergency surgery the night of the attack.
Police said they had not yet been able to interview that man because of his injuries. They said the husband’s description of the incident matched his wife’s. Molina was taken to a hospital for evaluation and later was cleared to be sent to jail. Police said he would not talk to officers.
Formal charges had not been filed by Wednesday, according to 4th District Court records. Molina had been scheduled to appear in court Tuesday on a class B lewdness charge, also out of Orem, for an alleged July 16 incident.
