Changes within the Utah House of Representatives have brought two Utah County residents into the forefront.

The Utah House Majority Caucus has elected Rep. Jefferson Moss, R-Saratoga Springs, to serve as the House Majority Whip, and Rep. Stephen Whyte, R-Mapleton, was chosen to represent District 65.

Moss’s term as Majority Whip will begin immediately, and he will serve until the next election cycle in 2022.

“I am thankful to my colleagues for allowing me to serve as the new House Majority Whip,” Moss said in a press release. “I look forward to working with Speaker Wilson, Rep. Schultz, Rep. Peterson and the rest of the Majority Caucus. This is an exciting opportunity that I am truly honored to have.”

He was elevated after House Majority Leader Francis Gibson, R-Mapleton, announced last month that he would be resigning from his role. Rep. Mike Schultz, R-Hooper, was elected to serve as the new majority leader by the GOP, leaving Moss to fill Shultz’s former position.

Whyte was sworn into the Utah House of Representatives on Nov. 9 to represent District 65. Whyte, who was appointed by the Utah County Republican Party on Nov. 6, will fill the seat vacated by Gibson.

Moss studied political science at Brigham Young University where he received both a Bachelor of Arts degree and a Master in Business Administration. He began his legislative service in 2017 when he was elected to represent the House of Representatives District 2 after running unopposed in both the primary and general elections. Moss was re-elected to represent District 2 in 2018 and 2020, and his current term was is to end on Jan. 1, 2023.

Whyte received a Bachelor of Arts in political science and a Master of Public Administration from Brigham Young University. Whyte previously served as an international affairs specialist in Washington D.C. where he helped to develop relationships between foreign ambassadors to the United States and members of Congress. He was named the associate vice president of university marketing and communications at Utah Valley University in 2017.
