One dead after police-involved shooting in Springville
Just before 11 p.m. on Friday, an anonymous caller informed Springville Police Dispatch that a person was shooting a gun into the air in a Walmart parking lot. According to a release from the Springville Police Department, the alleged suspect drove into the back of the first police car responding to the scene.
“When the officer exited the vehicle, he was confronted by the driver of the car who was now threatening the officer with a knife in his hand. The officer discharged his firearm, and the subject was mortally wounded,” reads the release.
Both additional responding officers and Springville Fire and Rescue performed first aid. The alleged subject was pronounced dead on the scene.
An investigation will be done by the Officer Involved Critical Incident team, which includes officers from all agencies “between Lehi and Santaquin” in Utah County.
The Critical Incident team will gather again to further investigate early next week.
“Preliminary investigation revealed no additional reports or evidence that any shots were fired prior to the officers’ arrival,” reads the release.
An autopsy had been completed on the subject Saturday, according to Lt. Warren Foster, but the report will not be released soon.
The shooting is the fourth in Springville in a month. On May 26, 75-year-old Michael Huff was shot. On May 18, 17-year-old Lily Conroy was allegedly shot by her ex-boyfriend in what was called then an apparent “murder/suicide” and on May 21 an Orem man allegedly shot Springville resident Gregory Shaffer.
