Utah Valley is a bright spot in the state, and letting the sunshine in has become a joint effort between Provo and Spanish Fork.

Provo City Power and Spanish Fork Power announce SharedSolar, a community-owned solar program. With SharedSolar, customers in multiple cities can lease solar panels from their utility instead of installing rooftop solar on their homes.

According to Kat Linford, spokesperson for Provo City Power, the program is a “great renewable alternative for our customers and proves to be more efficient and less expensive than rooftop solar.”

Currently, both electric utility’s resource mix consists of well over 40% non-carbon energy which includes wind, solar, hydro and other market renewable resources.

“The SharedSolar option is a win-win for customers because it allows them to generate renewable energy on the electrical grid without expensive up-front capital or financing costs. In addition, the program is available to customers who do not own a home or rooftop and it supports Provo’s economy,” said Travis Ball, director at Provo City Power.

It is anticipated that the city recourses will be 54% non-carbon or higher by the year 2025, well ahead of schedule to meet a resolution passed by the Provo City Municipal Council to be 60% renewable by 2030.

“I am pleased that Provo Power now offers an option for customers that allows them to be a part of the solar energy movement. Provo residents can now enroll to purchase blocks of the energy produced at the solar farm in Spanish Fork City,” said Provo Mayor Michelle Kaufusi. “The program is entirely optional, but we love offering our citizens options like this. We are glad about this additional piece of the puzzle, as Provo City moves increasingly toward renewable sources of energy.”

Provo Power and Spanish Fork have been anxiously awaiting this program to be offered to its customers and is now taking enrollments. There is limited availability and enrollment is taken on a first-come-first-serve basis. People can register online on the Renew Choice website.

Provo Power and Spanish Fork Power are Public Power Utilities that belong to American Public Power Association along with over 2,000 electric utilities in the nation. Provo Power is the largest in the state of Utah providing reliable electrical service to over 38,000 customers and Spanish Fork serves over 14,000 customers.
