Utah Valley University announced Monday that it will host its first annual China Challenge Summit on June 9, bringing together leaders and experts on U.S.-China relations.

While Utah has only accounted for less than 1% of the United States’ total trade with China, China is still the U.S.’s third-largest trading partner with total trade valued at over $650 billion in 2021 alone, according to the International Trade Administration.

Although trade between the United States and China has rebounded since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the evolution of geopolitical strategy and foreign policy continues to complicate trade between the two nations.

“Relations between the U.S. and China have never been as complex as they are today and with so much at stake,” Jon Huntsman, Jr., former U.S. ambassador to China and Utah governor, said in a press release. “The challenges are many — hostility over trade policies, China’s WTO obligations, military power, data privacy, cybersecurity, and the protection of intellectual property rights.

The purpose of this summit is to examine challenges U.S. businesses and policymakers may face in light of China’s geopolitical strategy, trade, business and foreign policies — and discuss ways to address these challenges.

“Attendees can expect to receive strategic insight and tactical advice for operating in the current global environment with special emphasis in China,” reads a press release from UVU.

The summit, which will also be hosted by World Trade Center Utah, will take place on UVU’s Orem Campus at the Noorda Center, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. In addition to Huntsman, Matt Pottinger, former deputy national security advisor, and Craig Allen, president of the U.S.-China Business Council will be among the featured speakers.

“The China Challenge Summit is an unprecedented gathering of many of the best minds in the world to discuss these challenges and provide actionable advice for business and policy leaders from around the world to help all of us within our various responsibilities navigate the challenging path ahead,” Huntsman said.
