Brigham Young University students pass by an entrance sign as they make their way toward campus during the first day of classes for Fall Semester on Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2019, in Provo.

Division of Continuing Education at Brigham Young University announced this week that it will partner with Ensign College to expand its BYU FlexGE program.

BYU FlexGE students take courses at BYU and enjoy the college experience without being admitted to the university as degree-seeking students. Instead, they take alternative classes — evening, Salt Lake Center, spring term and summer term — to earn transferable general education credits.

This collaboration will allow BYU FlexGE students to take classes from both BYU and Ensign College, which is located in Salt Lake City and owned by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as a part of the Church Educational System.

“BYU and Ensign College have been working together for a while to pave additional roads intended to bless the lives of students that will help them reach their personal educational goals. We are excited about this collaboration with Ensign College and the access to these new benefits our BYU FlexGE students now have,” said Lee Glines, BYU dean of continuing education, in a press release.

BYU FlexGE students will also be able to apply for federal financial aid through Ensign College and are eligible to earn one of 19 available associate’s degrees.

“Because FlexGE students attend BYU classes for transferrable credit, but aren’t matriculated into the university, this new collaboration will equip students with more resources to fund their education,” reads a press release from Ensign College.

Although this collaboration does not become effective until Jan. 4, 2023, BYU FlexGE students can opt-in now, select an Ensign College program and apply for financial aid. Credits earned from either university can go toward a degree from Ensign College.

In a press release, Ensign College President Bruce Kusch expressed “confidence that this collaboration with BYU Continuing Education will facilitate FlexGE students’ desires to pursue their educational goals with a marketable degree from Ensign College that will prepare them well for employment or further studies at BYU or other schools.”

“We are pleased to link arms with Ensign College in this way and are grateful for the blessings BYU FlexGE students will have available to them as a result of this association,” said Renata Forste, BYU international vice president, in a press release.
