U-Talk: Do you think proposed student debt relief will make a significant difference in people’s lives?

“It will for those it affects, absolutely. I know that if I owed $50,000 in student debt and 10 or 20,000 of it was forgiven, that would be a great break in my life. I think it’s a really good idea. Everyone in my family has gone to school and has incurred some debt of some sort and have spent years paying it off.” — Scott Lund, Orem

“There’s no such thing as a free lunch, so they may call it student debt relief, but eventually somebody is going to pay for it. I worked really, really hard to pay for my own education and I feel like it will allow kids the idea that it’s free. I know it’s only ten to 20 grand, but I think that you should work for it. To make taxpayers pay for your student debt, I think is wrong.” — Jenedy Eggleston, Pleasant Grove

“My daughter went to massage therapist school, and she ended up having a back problem. She can’t bend over and do massages, so she’s got this student debt that she can’t earn income off of and she’s paying down. It seems to me that in cases where they are physically unable to do what they are trained for, that can make a case for forgiving the debt.” — Kathryn Lemair, Orem

“Yes, because the people who will get debt relief will just get free money, and everyone else will pay for it. It’s mostly people who didn’t go to school will pay for the people who will go to school.” — Stefan Arnoldsen, Orem

“Definitely. Debt relief would help ease the stress and financial hardships many students are facing, especially these days with the high cost of living. Fresh out of college, many have realized that managing the budget between food, essentials, and housing leaves very little to pay back the accumulated schooling debt. Student loans should be more flexible and accessible to those pursuing a higher education. A little help goes a long way.” — Gerson Contreras, Springville
