Design options for a new Orem City flag were presented to the City Council on Tuesday, April 11, 2023.Over the past several years, Orem officials and residents have discussed the creation of a new city flag. With the desire to rebrand the city, it appears now is the time.
On Tuesday, Mayor Dave Young and the City Council — who have been moving to rebrand the city and add Family City USA to that branding — got their first look at potential flag options.
Peter and Jacob Brooks, of Brooks Advertising, presented the council with several options for what the new city flag could look like.
Just like the recently-adopted new Utah state flag, Jacob Brooks suggested that the Orem flag should be simplistic.
“The trend is to simplify flags,” Jacob Brooks said.
Peter Brooks offered that the design should be memorable and legible, but simple, referencing the Canadian and Japanese flags.
The Orem rebranding would use the flag as the core design and would be used on city vehicles, particularly police cars, on stationary and other items and communications.
Most design options for the flag have dark navy blue mountains framed in white with a sky blue field on top and a yellow orb in the field. Options included variations on that theme, including one with a white background which council member LaNae Millett said she liked best.
As part of the discussion, the mayor said he was wanted “Orem, Family City USA” to be on the flag.
Jacob Brooks, was not afraid to tell the mayor that vexillology — the study, history, symbolism and use of flags — indicates that more simplistic designs work better.
“They should have simplicity and memorability,” Brooks said. “Everybody has their own opinion, but we need a general consensus.”
A discussion ensued on the need for words to be on the flag with Peter Brooks saying “This is our ‘Title of Liberty,'” in reference to Alma 46:12 in the Book of Mormon.
“This flag discussion is part of a larger city branding effort to include the city’s nickname or slogan, FAMILY CITY USA on official city applications,” said Pete Wolfley, communications manager. “The Mayor and City Council will consider all the designs and make a decision at a future meeting.”
