Long’s death was confirmed by Provo Fire and Rescue Saturday night, and Mona City identified Katrina Long as a former city councilwoman. A GoFundMe identified their three sons, Reid, Thayne and Gage, as the other victims.

The family is survived by a daughter, Lydia.

“We are absolutely heartbroken by the death of Captain Spencer Long and his family,” Provo Fire and Rescue posted on social media Saturday evening. “Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time.”

According to the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office, the family is believed to have arrived at Sunglow Campground near Bicknell to go hiking and canyoneering.

At 5 p.m. Friday, authorities said they responded to a report of a missing body and arrived to find a young male in the wash near the campground. They found two additional victims during the search. Two additional bodies were found Saturday, the sheriff’s office said.

Authorities believe they were killed by flooding caused by heavy rains.

As the news broke Saturday, fire agencies and individuals from around Utah County and the state responded to the tragic news via social media.

Springville Fire and Rescue posted that it “would like to share our heartfelt condolences to the Provo Fire Department personnel during this difficult time.”

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Provo Fire today,”  Lehi Fire said.

The GoFundMe, created by Bree Nielson, a friend of the family, said Spencer and Katrina Long were loving, devoted parents.

“They touched the lives of so many with their kindness, generosity and unwavering love.”

Mona City called Katrina Long a dedicated public servant who made a lasting impact on countless lives.

“We will forever be grateful for all that Katrina and her family have done to support and strengthen our community,” Mona City said. “Our thoughts, prayers and heartfelt condolences are with her family, especially her daughter Lydia, and all who knew and loved them during this difficult time.”

Katrina Long was also the co-founder of Summit Medical Spa, with locations in Spanish Fork and Eagle Mountain.

“There are simply no words to express the depth of this loss,” the business said in a post Saturday evening. “Katrina was so much more than a co-founder — she was the heart of Summit Medical Spa.”
