WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Sen. Mitt Romney is still deliberating whether to seek reelection to the Senate in 2024.

“I’m not in a big hurry to get there,” he said.

Figuring in the equation will be what he thinks he can potentially get done if he stays in Congress, he said Thursday during a call with Utah reporters. The GOPer is finishing is first term.

“The reality is I’m looking to see what I’ve accomplished and what I can accomplish in a next term,” he said. Also factoring will be what he thinks he can get done given the current makeup of Congress and congressional leadership.

The focus of his Zoom call with reporters on Thursday was the Fiscal Responsibility Act, which the Senate passed later that evening. The measure, expected to be signed by President Joe Biden on Saturday, resolves the debt-ceiling crisis for now, averting a default on U.S. debt.

But Romney briefly discussed the issue of whether he’ll run again when asked. The topic has been a focus of continuing speculation among politicos. Riverton Mayor Trent Staggs, a fellow Republican, will seek the post and Brad Wilson, the Utah House speaker and also a GOPer, is considering a U.S. Senate bid.

How he views his ability to operate in Congress, Romney said, will “give me a good indication of whether it would be fruitful for me to be here or whether someone else should take a whack at it. So that’s something I’ll be deciding probably over the summer or the fall.”

Meantime, Romney is continuing fundraising efforts and has a team in place to aid with his reelection bid, if that’s the direction he goes. “I am doing what I’ve got to do to make sure that if I decide to run again I’ll win,” he said.
