This Friday, the Brigham Young University Museum of Art will be hosting their annual Family Arts Festival from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. The festival gives children an opportunity to utilize creativity through activities, games, projects, and more.

This year’s theme is “Tall Tales,” inspired by the landscapes of the American West featured in the “Searching for a Home” exhibit by Maynard Dixon. The exhibition, which will be on display until Sept. 23, boasts over 70 original paintings and poetry focusing on red rock landscapes, indigenous life, ranch homes and men searching for work during the Great Depression.

Children can participate in a build-your-own harmonica station, create a landscape, screen print for tote bags, create a custom candle and paint with yarn. Live entertainment will also be at the event.

“Each year my team of student educators plan and prepare a special day of engaging art-making opportunities for children and their families,” said Kitsa Behringer, a museum educator who leads family programs. “We can’t wait to engage with all who come on June 9th!”

The Family Arts Festival has been a yearly occurrence at the museum for just over a decade. Over 1,500 people attended the festival last year, according to the museum, making it one of the MOA’s largest events.

This event is free for children ages 12 and under and their families. The museum’s galleries will also be open and available to the community during the festival.
