Last week, the Utah Transportation Commission approved state funding for the S.R. 92 Pedestrian Bridge in Lehi, allowing the project to enter the design and construction phase.

The state will allocate $4,533,402 to the project through its Transportation Investment Fund to be paired with $4,466,598 in Mountainland Association of Government funding, giving the project $9 million of total funding.

The bridge will connect various trails north and south of S.R. 92, or Timpanogos Highway, and provide a safer pedestrian route to Belmont Elementary and Viewmont Middle School, north of Timpanogos Highway, and Skyridge High School, south of the highway.

The bridge is also near the site of the future Lehi Utah Temple.

The commission unanimously approved the funding during its Friday meeting, with one commissioner remarking that the state needs to stay ahead with the growth that is continuing to occur in the area.

Community members have long advocated for the pedestrian bridge to provide a safer route for children crossing Timpanogos Highway at Center Street. Last month, a boy was injured after he was struck by a car on the intersection.

Local officials responded to the approval on social media.

“This milestone represents nearly a decade of work, persistence, and collaboration,” Lehi City Councilwoman Emily Lockhart said. “From residents who have continued to advocate for this bridge, to Lehi City staff members, elected officials both past and present, and our state and local transportation partners, so many people have invested their time and energy to get us to this point. Thank you to everyone who has worked hard to help us get here!”

Utah County Commissioner Skyler Beltran credited current and former Lehi City elected officials, Sen. Brady Brammer and various other stakeholders for their efforts on the project.

“This new bridge will provide a safer route for students traveling to and from school while connecting the southern S.R. 92 neighborhoods to the exciting new commercial district and temple currently under construction,” Beltran said in a post.

Starting at $4.32/week.
