Editor’s note: U-Talk is a weekly feature in which we ask five local residents to tell us their thoughts about a particular issue. Responses may be edited for clarity and length.

“I actually have been following this kind of, so I think it’s really cool. I’m all for updating things, and getting new change … sometimes new is better. Like, change it up every once in a while. We’ve changed our winter license plates, so change it up every once in a while. It’s good. It’s modern. I feel like it somehow encompasses Utah better with the mountains.”  — Chelsea Holdaway, Provo

“I do believe that the new state flag represents Utah well, and it has, still, the beehive state, and it represents the mountains in the back. It’s very depicted of just where we live. I think it’s a necessary change just to have a little more Utah pride. I think it’s a little bit outdated, and, obviously, it still has the same colors of red, white, and blue, but I feel like it depicts a little bit more of Utah pride today.” — Mark Egan, Orem

“The new one’s cool. It’s sleek and modern, you know? I kind of do prefer the old one — well, I don’t know if I prefer it. The old one is just kind of more unique, and that whole thing is cool. The new one is kind of geometric and a little boring. I don’t know if I prefer one or the other, actually.” — Brayden Rickeberg, Orem

“I say somewhere in between. It looks more sleek and modern. I don’t know if it was necessary, so if they’re pouring a lot of money into it, I think that that’s dumb… if not, I think it looks cool. I think it looks modern. It seems like a lot of companies are doing more minimalism on their logos, and it kind of seems to be following that.  I like that you got the mountains, you have the beehive. I mean, the old one is great too because it’s instantly recognizable, but… I wouldn’t associate it with Utah right away.” — Karen Marie, Lindon

“I’d say somewhere in between. You know, I like the simplicity of the newer one. The older one looks kind of cluttered, but I don’t know if it was necessary, per se, to have a new state flag, so it’s kind of mid. I didn’t see anything wrong on just this very quick glance with the initial design, other than, you know, just preference that it’s a little busy.” — Seth Field, Orem
