A Springville man was shot and killed early Sunday morning after reportedly exchanging gunfire with members of the Springville Police Department, injuring one officer. The identity of the man has not been released.

According to the police department, multiple calls reported noises that sounded “like gunshots” in rapid succession. While searching the area, a Springville officer approached what he believed was a traffic accident near 1200 West and 1000 North.

When the officer approached the vehicle, the man fired gunshots in his direction, Lt. Warren Foster told the Daily Herald. Multiple gunshots hit the officer’s vehicle as a second Springville police officer arrived to the scene, he said. Both officers then shot the man, who was pronounced dead at the scene after officers reported rendering medical aid.

The total number of shots fired by the officers and the man is unknown, though both officers did shoot during the exchange, according to Foster.

An investigation is ongoing and will be led by the Utah County Officer Involved Critical Incident Team.

“We have no idea for a motive. We have no idea why this guy did what he did,” Foster said.

Officers from the Utah County Sheriff’s Office, Spanish Fork and Mapleton police departments responded to assist, along with others from Springville, though all arrived after the incident.

The initial officer, whose identity has not been released publicly, was shot in the leg and suffered non-life-threatening injuries. He was brought by medical personnel to Utah Valley Hospital via ambulance.

“From what we understand, it was a clean, not-going-to-jeopardize-his-career injury,” Foster said.
