Director Shannon Cohn and other panelists discuss the effects of endometriosis at a screening event at Everyman Cinemas in London on April 11, 2023.Endometriosis is a medical condition occuring in 10% of women ages 15 to 44, according to John Hopkins Medicine. It causes the buildup of tissues around reproductive organs, leading to inflammation, cysts, scarring, pain and varying levels of infertility.
The tissue has to be removed through surgery to reduce the spread and impact of the disease. Approximately 24% to 50% of women with infertility in the United States also have endometriosis. With its cause unknown, it’s important to receive as early a diagnosis as possible.
Utah Valley University is seeking to help community members get the help they need with a screening of “Below The Belt,” a documentary that discusses the disease’s functions, early symptoms, how to identify it, how to get it correctly diagnosed and more.
Admission to the screening and following panel is free and open to anyone upon registration for the event. The university encourages women, doctors, family members of those with endometriosis, and others to come and learn more to empower those affected with the right tools to fight it.
The screening will begin on May 10 at 6:30 p.m. inside Smith Theatre at the Noorda Center for the Performing Arts. The ensuing panel will include film’s director and women’s health ambassador, Shannon Cohn, along with expert endometriosis excision surgeon Dr. Jeff Arrington, UVU president Astrid Tuminez and Mary Alice Hatch, trustee of the Marriott Daughters Foundation.
