On Wednesday the Orem Family Fitness Center had internal flooding caused by the triggering of the fire suppression system on the second floor of the center.

“There were early assumptions that a pipe had burst but nothing of that nature happened,” said Pete Wolfley, Orem director of communications. “Orem Fire Department officials as well as our facility professionals are on site working to determine what caused the deluge system to activate.”

Employees from several Orem city departments have been mobilized to begin the cleanup process. The extent of the water damage and the length of the facility’s closure is not yet known

The newly-renovated Orem Family Fitness Center opened in March 2021 and cost about $29 million.

Since the fitness center opened, it has seen a growth in memberships from 12,000 to more than 20,000 according to Bryce Merrill, director of recreation. Those new members are mostly families and young professionals.

Orem City will provide updates to residents and patrons as they become available.
