Eric Ellis has been selected as Vineyard's new city manager.

The Vineyard City Council voted unanimously Wednesday to install Eric Ellis, former executive director of the Utah Lake Authority, as the new city manager.

“Ellis is an experienced public servant and skilled administrator,” said Mayor Julie Fullmer. “He is perfectly qualified for the day-to-day management of Vineyard City during a period of continued growth and prosperity.”

Some residents, who spoke during a public comment period at the meeting, appeared leery of the choice given Ellis’ support for a plan to dredge Utah Lake and create islands that could have housed up to a half a million residents.

Ellis expressed his enthusiasm about the new role and exciting growth in Vineyard, saying in an email, “I am deeply honored and genuinely thrilled to assume the role of City Manager for Vineyard. This appointment provides an amazing opportunity to work with the city’s forward-thinking team of dedicated staff, our incredible mayor, and City Council.”

Fullmer has had the opportunity to get to know Ellis and work with him as she is currently the chair of the Utah Lake Authority.

“The prospect of being at the forefront of the creation of a multi-modal, master-planned city center is a dream opportunity. I eagerly anticipate collaborating with this exceptional team and our vibrant community to celebrate our city’s rich heritage while embracing the myriad opportunities that will unfold as our city continues to evolve in the coming years,” Ellis said.

In the months ahead, Ellis said he is excited about immersing himself within the team, delving into the city’s strategic plan and gaining insight into major planned projects, especially those in process.

“I am enthusiastic about engaging with our residents to understand where we are succeeding and where we can make meaningful improvements,” Ellis said. “Thank you for this incredible opportunity. I am ready to hit the ground running and dedicate myself to the betterment of Vineyard.”

Ellis completed an associate degree in business administration from Utah Valley University and a bachelor’s degree in marketing communications from Brigham Young University. After working for a few years in the marketing industry, Ellis pursued a graduate degree in public administration from the University of Utah, emphasizing in local government management. Since that time, he has served in various positions with Salt Lake City’s budget management office, the office of Utah Lt. Gov. Greg Bell, the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, and most recently as the executive director of the Utah Lake Authority.

The official search began when Ezra Nair announced publicly in early September that he would be accepting the role of the newly created Utah County administrator position effective Nov. 10.

More than 150 individuals from throughout the country applied for the position of Vineyard city manager. According to Fullmer, the City Council interviewed three finalists and selected Ellis as the top candidate.

Speaking on behalf of the City Council, Fullmer expressed optimism for the future with Ellis at the helm, stating, “We are thrilled to welcome Eric Ellis to Vineyard City. His strong leadership skills and dedication to public service make Eric the ideal choice to help steer our city as it continues to grow.”

“We are committed to making Vineyard the best place in Utah to live, work and play. I have full confidence in Eric’s ability to work collaboratively with our community, elected officials and city staff to address the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. Eric’s experience and his deep commitment to community engagement and effective governance make him an exceptional choice for Vineyard City,” she added.

Ellis will officially assume his new position on Nov. 13.
