The daughter of a Daily Herald reporter was arrested Tuesday evening after she was involved in an alleged assault on Orem Mayor David Young at the Orem City Center.

Linnea Geraldine Pugmire, 31, of Orem, was arrested by Orem police and booked into the Utah County Jail on suspicion of threatening elected officials, a third-degree felony; propelling a bodily substance and assault, both class B misdemeanors; and disorderly conduct, an infraction.

Formal charges had not yet been filed as of Wednesday evening.

The event occurred following an Orem City Council meeting in which Young spent approximately 20 minutes expressing frustration and disagreement with the content of stories published in the newspaper and specifically naming Daily Herald reporter Genelle Pugmire as their author.

According to an affidavit of probable cause, Orem police dispatch received two 911 calls at 7:54 p.m. Tuesday regarding an assault at 56 N. State St. in Orem. The callers reported that Young had been spit on and then assaulted.

Upon arrival at the scene, Orem police officers made contact with Linnea Pugmire, who fit the description of the suspect, and immediately arrested her.

“During the interview Pugmire admitted to being upset at the Mayor over personal concerns with family,” states the affidavit. “Pugmire stated she confronted the Mayor and during this time ‘may have’ slapped him and spit at him.”

Officers also learned that an alleged second victim “had been hit and spit on,” according to the affidavit. Officers also reportedly recovered cellphone video of the incident from a witness.

Bail was set for Linnea Pugmire at $2,500 and she was released on bond Wednesday morning. A court date was set for Oct. 4.
