Police respond to a home in American Fork, where an elderly couple was found deceased Jan. 3, 2024.

Police are wrapping up their investigation into an American Fork couple who were found dead in their home earlier this year.

American Fork police responded to a home at 179 N. Center St., on Jan. 3 for a welfare check. Once inside, authorities found 84-year-old Sally and Duane Francom deceased.

This week, just over three months later, the state medical examiner ruled the deaths’ cause as “undetermined” due to the degree of decomposition.

Initially, investigators observed what they called “suspicious factors,” according to a January press release by the American Fork Police Department. One of those suspicious factors was that the couple’s bodies were found in different rooms in the home, an investigator told the Daily Herald.

However, no trauma was found on either of the their bodies, or anything else that seemingly would have contributed to the couple’s deaths apart from natural causes, according to a press release from the Utah State Medical Examiner.

Authorities stated that the Francoms both suffered from heart disease, and toxicology reports showed nothing suspicious in their blood.

American Fork police says they are now closing the case.
