Garage fire leaves occupants of Provo home temporarily displaced
The scorching temperatures didn’t provide any relief as crews from Provo Fire & Rescue responded to a garage fire early Monday afternoon near 100 North and 1000 West.
Public Information Officer Capt. Jeanie Atherton said the call came in around 12:30 p.m. about a fire in a garage behind a family’s home, the flames also burning close to an adjacent home to the north.
Atherton didn’t have specifics on the extent of the damage except that the garage is likely a total loss. “It sustained most of the damage, and there was some damage to either the house to the east and the house to the north” she said.
Though the home is still standing, occupants will be displaced temporarily because their utilities were shut off as crews responded to the fire. “The power and the gas have been shut off, just for safety reasons, so that will have to be turned back on before they’ll be able to (inhabit) their home,” Atherton told the Daily Herald.
She noted that the American Red Cross was contacted to assist in finding shelter for those living in the residence.
Though a devastating day for the impacted residents, the home is surrounded by trees, which fortunately did not catch fire amid the incident.
Atherton said it’s a good reminder about the importance of creating a buffer between a person’s home and vegetation.
“So if you have tall trees right next to your house, or big bush bushes and shrubs right next to your house, those are things that when a fire happens, those can absolutely ignite, and they can cause your home to start on fire,” she said.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
