Kayla’s life as a single parent of two children was already difficult. But the past few months have brought loss and mourning to the family, making this Christmas harder than usual. With financial struggles on top of the other hardships, Kayla is reaching out for help from generous donors through United Way’s Sub for Santa program.
“The hardest part has been the last two months,” Kayla said. In September, her aunt passed away in her sleep on Kayla’s mother’s birthday. Ten days later, her mother passed away as well, losing an 18-month struggle with breast cancer.
Kayla has her own health issues. A severe head injury led to her having chronic migraines and stress-induced seizures. Because of these problems and the resulting financial burden, Kayla and her two sons had to move in with family members, causing the boys to change schools and having to make new friends.
Despite all of these struggles, Kayla said her sons have been strong throughout all of it. Now, she is hoping to help them have a merry Christmas.
Twelve-year-old Jeffrey needs a new winter coat, pants and shoes. He enjoys reading fantasy, mystery and adventure books. He would like to have some wireless headphones or a Nerf gun.
Six-year-old Jack is in need of pants, shoes and shirts. He likes to read educational books and books about superheroes. He would enjoy gifts related to STEM (science, technology, engineering and math), such as robot-building materials and Legos.
“So thankful for this program and how much it has truly helped and blessed our family,” Kayla said.
