Two families are mourning the losses of their loved ones after a string of fatalities in Utah County this past weekend.
The first happened Saturday around 2:15 p.m. on U.S. Highway 6 in Spanish Fork Canyon near Diamond Fork Road, where the Utah Highway Patrol said a crash involving three Kia vehicles left one person dead.
According to UHP, a black Kia Soul was traveling east in wintry conditions when the driver somehow lost control and spun into opposite lane of traffic.
A white Kia Sportage hit the Soul, forcing it into another lane where it was struck yet again, this time head-on by a white Kia Telluride, a Utah Department of Public Safety press release said.
The impact from the second strike threw an unrestrained passenger who was in the backseat of the Kia Soul from the vehicle and they died on the scene, according to the release.
The driver and front-seat passenger of the Soul both sustained injuries and were taken to the hospital.
“Multiple occupants of the Sportage had minor injuries and were transported by ambulance. The two occupants of the Telluride sustained minor injuries and neither were transported,” the release said.
While road conditions appeared slick at the time, authorities did not indicate any definitive factors for the crash.
Much later on Saturday, just before 11:30 p.m., one person was killed and another critically injured after a rollover crash on Eagle Mountain Boulevard near state Route 73, the sheriff’s office said.
“UCSO Detectives and our traffic accident investigation team were called out to investigate the crash” the agency said on social media Sunday morning.
As of Monday afternoon, “investigators are looking into different aspects of the case,” and were not prepared to release any further information, Sgt. Ray Ormond told the Daily Herald when reached.
In both cases, authorities did not release an identity or information regarding the deceased victims.
