A Provo woman has been arrested in an investigation of an alleged child abuse case, according to a press release from Provo police.

Police received a report from the Division of Child and Family Services on Tuesday regarding a 3-month-old infant who was in surgery at Primary Children’s Hospital after being brought in by the infant’s mother, Sydney Kennedy, for a head injury. It was determined that the injuries were possibly child abuse-related, the release said.

The mother brought the infant into the Utah Valley Hospital on Monday with a head injury and hospital staff requested a Life Flight transfer to Primary Children’s after determining the injury was serious.

Doctors at Primary Children’s then reportedly discovered three skull fractures and an active brain bleed that required surgery, as well as multiple rib fractures, a clavicle fracture, brain swelling and bleeding behind the eyes, which the release said is consistent with shaken baby syndrome.

Provo police located the infant’s parents at their home in Provo and took them to the police station for interviews. The infant’s father admitted to being concerned about the infant’s safety with their mother.

Detectives interviewed Kennedy and concluded there was probable cause that she was responsible for the infant’s injuries. A review of the case with the Utah County Attorney’s Office led to an agreement that the case warrants the charge of attempted aggravated homicide, which is a first-degree felony, though formal charges have not yet been brought forward.

Kennedy was later booked into the Utah County Jail.

Starting at $4.32/week.
