Children compete in the pie eating contest at Rose Garden Park in Pleasant Grove during the city's Strawberry Days celebration on Friday, June 16, 2023.

Pleasant Grove’s Strawberry Days is known as the longest-running city celebration in Utah, spanning well over a century.

The eight-day festival gives attendees a taste of the city’s rich history and culture.

Commemorating its 103rd year, 2024’s theme is “Strawberry Days: The Heart of Pleasant Grove.” Strawberry Days Committee Chair Lisa Young says the inspiration comes from recent work that went into restoring the iconic “G” that sits on the mountain above the city. “It took countless hours … from the (structural) integrity and the money to the people that worked hard on that. It’s kind of the heart of our community” she said.

The festivities kick off Saturday with a firefighters breakfast from 7-10 a.m. at the Pleasant Grove fire station, followed by a car show, spikeball tournament and free street party and concert along Main Street. Other festival favorites include the PRCA rodeo running Wednesday through June 22 at the rodeo grounds, carnivals, the grand parade and, of course, lots of strawberries and cream.

Pleasant Grove was a major strawberry producer in the early to mid-1900s. Those days are long gone, but loads of the small, sweet red fruit will be on hand for people to enjoy. Young said they ordered around 1,800 cases of strawberries for this year’s celebration. But with the recent hot weather, she’s not ruling out the chance that they may need even more.

“When it’s warm, your concessions are a lot higher. And this is set to be a little bit of a warmer week for us than normal, so we ordered a little more. We may even go through 2,000 (cases) this year,” Young said.

Strawberry Days runs through June 23.
