A slew of charges against a Provo man accused of sexually abusing children over a span of nearly 40 years have been dropped.

David Lee Hamblin, 70, was arrested in 2022 on six first-degree felony charges related to claims of abuse involving minors, with cases dating back to the 1980s and ’90s.

Last week, 4th District Judge Roger Griffin agreed to dismiss the case due to evidence concerns and “discovery problems,” KSL TV reported.

Defense attorneys reportedly filed a motion Feb. 19 to have the case dismissed, citing the aforementioned factors. One day later, the judge granted the motion.

In September 2022, Utah County announced several charges against Hamblin, including  three counts of first-degree felony sodomy of a child, one first-degree felony count of rape of a child, two first-degree felony charges of aggravated sexual abuse of a child and one misdemeanor count of lewdness involving a child.

Prosecutors will determine whether or not those charges can be refiled at a later time.

This marks the second time child sex abuse charges against Hamblin have been dropped.

He was arrested in December 2012 in Provo based on similar allegations, but the charges were dismissed less than two years later.

According to court documents, Hamblin still faces six second-degree felony charges of sexual abuse in Sanpete County, allegedly involving a young boy.

Starting at $4.32/week.
