Eagle Mountain’s newest middle school now officially has its own identity.
On Tuesday, the Alpine School District Board of Education voted unanimously in naming it Sage Canyon Middle School, with a mascot of the Coyotes.
The selection was one of three possible choices presented to the board by Principal Brian Jolley earlier this month.
Other options were the Coyote Ridge Middle School Mavericks and West Desert Middle School Coyotes.
“All three are very well liked, and we would be happy with any of the three,” Jolley said before the board during Tuesday evening’s naming portion of their meeting.
While the Coyote Ridge name seemingly had garnered some interest, board President Julie King said the largest amount of community feedback she received was in support of Sage Canyon.
Boundaries for the new school were set last December and the facility is slated to open in time for the 2025-26 school year in August.
It will be the 15th intermediate school in Alpine School District, according to a district press release issued Wednesday, though the district is set to dissolve and be divided after elections last November.
Sage Canyon Middle School, at 1400 E. Harmony Way, will serve around 1,500 students in Eagle Mountain. Feeder elementary schools include Black Ridge, Brookhaven, Cedar Valley, Hidden Hollow and Pony Express.
“We are so excited to be the Sage Canyon Middle School Coyotes,” Jolley said in the release. “We love the name and are committed to being as strong, intelligent, and resilient as our new name indicates.”
The school colors are black and gold, with a touch of sage green.
District officials say that, together, the school’s name. mascot and color pattern display a sense of endurance, resilience and pioneering spirit.
“Now we move forward with final preparations, united like the Pack, as we build a school community that relentlessly pursues student learning and wellbeing,” Jolley said.
Up next, is the beginning stages of creating a Parent Teacher Student Association for Sage Canyon.
Those interested are invited to meet the new principal, learn more about the school and weigh in on who should serve on the PTSA board during an event March 12 at Black Ridge Elementary School, located at 9358 Sunset Drive in Eagle Mountain, King announced in a social media post Wednesday.
