A Pleasant Grove Junior High School teacher was arrested and booked in the Utah County Jail on Wednesday after being accused of sexually assaulting a young female student.

Keaton Tanner, 29, of American Fork, was arrested on one count of rape of a child and two counts of tampering with a witness.

He was put on administrative leave following his arrest, according to the Alpine School District.

A police affidavit said the Pleasant Grove Police Department received a complaint from a friend of the alleged victim about a “boyfriend she had in junior high,” who reportedly was Tanner. The friend knew Tanner as a history and guided studies teacher at Pleasant Grove Junior High School, where she and the other girl had attended.

The alleged victim had told the friend she’d had a sexual relationship with Tanner and that he had raped her, the report read.

The two girls recently confronted Tanner at his American Fork residence, according to the affidavit, before returning to a Pleasant Grove residence, where a man reportedly approached their car and knocked on the window.

“It was (Tanner), who then climbed into the back seat of the vehicle,” the report states. “While he was in the vehicle the (friend) recorded the interaction with her cell phone. Most of the recording is dark but during a portion of the video the male exits the vehicle and then knocks on the driver’s side window. The window then rolls down slightly and you clearly see (Tanner’s) face.

“In the video you can hear (Tanner) telling the victim to tell ‘her’ they just made out or something and didn’t have sex. The (friend) is then heard telling Keaton he needs to learn from his mistakes and can’t bribe a person.

“The (friend) said (Tanner) told the victim he would give her a bunch of money and said he had $500 in his car. He went to his vehicle and came back with cash and then said he only had $50. The (friend) said they did not take any money. In the video you can hear the (friend) telling (Tanner) he needs to learn that ‘little girls’ should not be attractive to him to which (Tanner) replies ‘I have’ and that he ‘hasn’t done anything with anyone else’.”

When police notified the junior high administrators, they learned school administration had previously pulled Tanner aside, telling him to “stop having the victim in his classroom all the time alone,” the affidavit said.

Police also were informed that Tanner recently had requested to take a one-year sabbatical to go to Germany to work on a master’s degree.

“It should be noted Mr. Tanner served an LDS mission in Germany and goes there often,” the report said. “It is feared he is trying to flee the country as he asked for the sabbatical shortly after being confronted by the victim and complainant.”

Police are requesting Tanner be held without bail, claiming he is a flight risk and a risk to the public.

A statement sent to the Daily Herald by the Alpine School District said the district is “taking all available steps to cooperate with law enforcement. We are in communication with the Pleasant Grove Police Department as they conduct their investigation.”

“The welfare of our students is non-negotiable,” the statement continued. “All district employees undergo a criminal background check prior to beginning employment. When we learn of employee conduct that may violate the trust patrons have placed in us, we take appropriate action to protect students.”
