On Aug. 7, a plane piloted by student pilot Chase Day took off from Provo Airport and then went down moments later in Utah Lake, killing Day. A female flight instructor survived with serious injuries.

The flight, operated by ATP Flight School, began climbing to the southeast with a groundspeed of 68-75 mph before beginning a rapid descent, coming down in marshland in Provo Bay, according to the NTSB.

The NTSB said air traffic control audio indicated that other aircraft reported moderate to severe turbulence in the area near the time of the crash.

Security footage showed areas of tall dust formations moving south of the airport during the accident, with one formation moving across the departure end of the runway as the airplane entered the video frame, the NTSB said.

A GoFundMe organized last month said Day had recently earned his private pilot’s license and had a dream of becoming a commercial pilot.

“He was a loving son, brother, uncle, and friend to so many, and he brought passion and heart to everything he did,” Bunker said. “His loss has left his family and everyone who knew him devastated.”

The fundraiser was launched to help pay for funeral expenses and the cost of Day’s flight school, the GoFundMe said.

“During a time of overwhelming grief, Ryan hopes this support can give the family a little breathing room and allow them to focus on mourning and remembering Chase,” Bunker said.
