In today’s digital age, cybersecurity has become a critical concern for communities, businesses and citizens. Cyber hacks have been hitting organizations and individuals alike, with these hacks costing the state of Utah alone nearly $6 million between 2016 and 2022.

As we continue to see reports showing that countries like China and Russia are hacking a range of networks, it’s important to acknowledge how cybersecurity underpins Utah’s and America’s economic and national security.

From our local governments and Utah’s thriving small business ecosystem to our U.S. Air Force bases and defense system testing locations, for example, everything is at risk, and we must take steps to ensure we’re protected.

With these hacks coming from our adversaries, having a strong domestic cybersecurity apparatus that is developed by our leading U.S. technology companies is more important than ever.

Here in Utah, we have a number of sensitive sites that could be vulnerable. From Hill Air Force Base, military testing and training sites, and Dugway Proving Ground, ensuring they have a safe and secure digital infrastructure is critical to U.S. national security. A cyberattack on any of these sites — targeting our military information, data on military personnel, communications networks or digital infrastructure — could be costly and could expose sensitive data to our adversaries. And unfortunately, this is not out of the realm of possibility, as China has a history of infiltrating U.S. military bases.

That’s why it’s important that both Utah and the United States are equipped with the best technology to defend against these attacks. Some of the best counter-cyber innovations are being developed here at home by our own U.S. technology companies. To me, it’s reassuring knowing that this cyber technology is not only being developed by the most advanced tech sector in the world but also by trustworthy homegrown companies that share our values. Knowing tech that protects American companies and intelligence is made by U.S. innovators means that our data is being protected by those who share our same values and priorities.

But cybersecurity is not only a matter of national importance — it’s also a concern that should resonate with every single individual in Utah. A cyberattack could target families, small businesses or local governments, just like a military base.

Small businesses have become especially attractive to hackers because they usually lack the cybersecurity infrastructure compared to larger businesses. These attacks can often be costly for small businesses that already operate with smaller budgets. According to Accenture’s Cost of Cybercrime Study, 43% of cyberattacks are aimed at small businesses. To help our local mom and pop shops stay safe and secure, we need our elected leaders to implement policies that strengthen the American technology companies and the innovations they create that these businesses rely on.

Fortunately for Utahans, the Beehive State is known for its vibrant tech ecosystem, and this industry can be a powerful ally in the fight against cyber threats. In fact, Salt Lake City-based alphaMountain is aiding cybersecurity and network tools in the area. Using alphaMountain’s API, users can access comprehensive threat reputation, enabling security tools to make informed blocking decisions and conduct efficient cyber investigations. This is just one example of how Utah’s innovators can be an invaluable asset in the cybersecurity fight.

As we navigate the ever-evolving landscape of technology, which becomes more deeply intertwined in every facet of our lives, we see just how necessary cybersecurity protections are. By embracing technology, fostering innovation and strengthening U.S. technology companies, we can fortify our collective defenses and ensure that our digital future remains secure.
