Community rallies behind young soccer enthusiast battling brain tumor

By Gloria Albrecht - The Pyramid | Aug 23, 2023

In a heartwarming display of unity and compassion, the local community has come together to support 11-year-old Alejandro Contreras-Huitron, a young soccer enthusiast recently diagnosed with a brain tumor. Known for his infectious smile and love for the game, Alejandro has captured the hearts of many, inspiring a collective effort to aid his recovery. The high school soccer fields in Mount Pleasant were abuzz on Saturday morning August 19th, as members of the community showed up in support to play soccer in a tournament to benefit the young boy and his family.

Alejandro’s diagnosis came as a shock to those who know him well. Despite facing the daunting prospect of brain surgery and enduring hours of medical tests, his spirit remains unbroken. His resilience in the face of adversity has become a beacon of hope for all those who have been touched by his story.

The surgery went well and brought smiles back to Alejandro’s face as he began the challenging journey of rehabilitation. He has overcome dizziness and participated in physical therapy as he worked to regain his ability to walk.

Community members have rallied behind Alejandro and his family, recognizing the financial and emotional strain they now face. Medical bills, combined with the distance from home and Alejandro’s father’s inability to work while supporting his son in the hospital, have created an overwhelming burden. The additional challenges of a broken-down car and the care of their two other boys further compound the Mt. Pleasant’s family’s difficulties.

Alejandro’s father, Raf, a dedicated soccer coach for both high school and youth teams, has selflessly given his time to the community. Now, the community has a chance to give back. A recent soccer tournament organized to benefit Alejandro saw an impressive turnout, with families spending hours supporting the cause as their children competed in a day-long tournament in Mt. PLeasant. Alejandro’s coach was instrumental in arranging the event, reflecting the tight-knit nature of the community and its commitment to helping one of its own. Soccer players from all over the county participated in the event with several 3v3 teams playing back-to-back games throughout the day. Each winning team was able to greet Alejandro at the conclusion of the tournament and pose for a picture with him as he expressed excitement at the notion of playing soccer all day.

The family has now received news that the tumor is cancerous and his path forward involves beginning chemotherapy and radiation treatments. Alejandro will undergo treatment 5 days a week at Primary Children’s Hospital, rendering him unable to attend school during this critical period. Despite the weight of this news, the collective prayers and support continues to shine brightly illuminating the path ahead with hope and resilience. Donations to the family’s Venmo and GoFundMe page persist, a testament to the unyielding compassion and solidarity that this story has ignited.

In the midst of challenges and uncertainty, Alejandro’s enduring smile serves as a reminder of the indomitable spirit that resides within us all. The unwavering support of the community for this young soccer enthusiast and his family exemplifies the remarkable capacity for compassion and unity, reminding us that in times of adversity, we are strongest when we stand together.
