DUTCH JOHN — Looking for an exciting wildlife adventure this summer? Look no further! Join the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources for a remarkable opportunity to witness majestic ospreys in their natural habitat. This free event will take place on Saturday, July 8, at the picturesque Flaming Gorge, promising an unforgettable experience for nature enthusiasts of all ages.

Get ready for osprey encounters

Ospreys, also known as fish hawks or sea hawks, are extraordinary birds of prey renowned for their remarkable fishing skills. These birds have an exclusive diet consisting almost entirely of fish, making Flaming Gorge the perfect destination for them. With a success rate of catching fish approximately one out of every four dives, these active birds never fail to impress.

“The birds at Flaming Gorge are incredibly agile, showcasing their exceptional fishing abilities. This is particularly impressive considering the reservoir’s popularity among anglers,” said Tonya Kieffer-Selby, Conservation Outreach Manager for the DWR’s Northeastern Region.

Flaming Gorge is a favored location for ospreys, hosting the largest breeding colony in Utah and one of the largest populations in the western U.S. Every year, these magnificent birds return to Flaming Gorge to breed and raise their young. Their nests, measuring up to 10 feet wide, can be easily spotted around the area.

Identifying ospreys is a breeze due to their distinct white heads with a brown stripe passing through their vibrant yellow eyes. The unmistakable high-pitched, whistling calls of these birds fill the dam area and the banks of the Green River.

“If you’re lucky, you might witness an osprey plunging feet-first into the water, capturing fish with its powerful talons,” Kieffer-Selby explained. “After a successful catch, ospreys carry the fish back to their perch or nest, often sharing it with their mate and young. Keep your ears open for their piercing calls as they soar through the skies.”

Event details and tips

The free osprey viewing event will be held adjacent to the parking lot at the Flaming Gorge Dam visitor center, located at 5995 Flaming Gorge Dam in Dutch John. Join fellow wildlife enthusiasts from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, July 8th, for an extraordinary wildlife spectacle.

While spotting scopes will be available, feel free to bring your own binoculars for an up-close encounter with these magnificent creatures. Expert biologists and educational displays will also be present, offering valuable insights into the world of ospreys. Given the remote nature of the event, it is advisable to pack a lunch, ample water, sunscreen, and bug spray to ensure a comfortable experience.

“The ospreys are most active during the morning hours, making this event ideal for the whole family. In addition to ospreys, visitors may spot other birds of prey, including golden eagles, turkey vultures, and American kestrels, which are frequently sighted at this annual event,” Kieffer-Selby added.

While the event is free, pre-registration on Eventbrite is strongly encouraged. For further information or inquiries about the event, please contact the DWR’s Vernal office at 435-781-9453.
