Bats possess the remarkable ability of true flight, setting them apart as the only mammals capable of this skill. They can be found throughout the state, thriving wherever they can find suitable food sources, shelter, and water. Utah’s bats primarily feed on insects, contributing to natural pest control.

While the southern part of the state boasts the highest diversity of bat species, DWR biologists conduct comprehensive surveys across Utah to study different species, their distribution, and population dynamics. During these surveys, biologists employ special nets strategically placed near water sources to gently capture bats as they swoop down to feed. The biologists promptly release the bats after identifying their species and collecting valuable health data. At the upcoming event, attendees will have the exclusive opportunity to closely observe these captivating creatures before their release.

We are thrilled to offer more information about these unique animals and provide the chance to witness them up close at our upcoming event.”

Event details

The bat seminar is scheduled for Thursday, July 13, from 7:30 to 10 p.m. It will take place at the DWR Springville Office located at 1115 North Main St. in Springville. Attendees will gather in the conference room for an engaging presentation on bats, followed by a visit to the back patio near the river for the netting survey. To prioritize the well-being of the bats, participants will be required to wear N95 masks when in close proximity. Masks will be provided, but attendees are welcome to bring their own. Additionally, bringing a small flashlight or headlamp is highly encouraged as the area will be dimly lit.
