EPHRAIM — Granary Arts is thrilled to present an exciting lineup of film screenings for its October Film Feast series, curated by Carly and Jared Jakins. These screenings promise to captivate audiences with their diverse selection of cinematic experiences.

Film Feast: “Maika: The Girl From Another Galaxy”

Join us for the heartwarming adventure of “Maika: The Girl From Another Galaxy” directed by Ham Tran. This poignant and fun-filled film follows the story of an 8-year-old boy who befriends a powerful alien girl named Maika after investigating a mysterious falling star. The film has been praised as a “charming, heartfelt film” and was selected as an official Common Sense Selection for Families from Common Sense Media. It’s also a final nominee for Shine Global’s inaugural Children’s Resilience in Film Award. Don’t miss this touching tale on Oct. 4 at 7:30 p.m. at the Towne Theater, 21 N. Main St. Ephraim, UT, 84627. This event is family-friendly with a running time of 1 hour and 45 minutes.

About the Filmmaker – Ham Tran

Ham Tran is an accomplished filmmaker with an impressive track record. He received his MFA in directing from the UCLA School of Film and Television, where his short films garnered numerous accolades. His feature film, “Journey From the Fall,” premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and received 16 international film festival awards. Tran has also directed successful films in Vietnam, including “Bitcoin Heist” and “She’s the Boss.”

About the Curators – Carly and Jared Jakins

Carly and Jared Jakins are a dynamic documentary filmmaking team and curatorial collaborators for Film Feast at Granary Arts. Their work includes award-winning short films and feature-length documentaries. Their feature debut, “Scenes From the Glittering World,” was nationally broadcast on ITVS’s “Independent Lens” (PBS) in 2022. They are passionate about exploring cultural and historical intersections, especially in the American West.

This Ain’t No Mouse Music

On Oct. 10, prepare to be transported into the world of roots music with “This Ain’t No Mouse Music!” This documentary explores the life of Chris Strachwitz, a detective of deep American music who founded legendary Arhoolie Records. The film takes you on a musical journey from Texas to New Orleans, Cajun country to Appalachia. It features artists like Ry Cooder, Bonnie Raitt, Taj Mahal, and more. Following the screening, there will be an in-person Q&A with moderator Brad Barber and filmmaker Chris Simon. Catch this fascinating documentary at the Towne Theater, 21 N. Main St. Ephraim, UT, 84627. The running time is 1 hour and 32 minutes.

About the Filmmakers – Chris Simon and Maureen Gosling

Chris Simon is an award-winning documentary filmmaker with more than 25 years of experience. She founded Sageland Media and has produced independent documentaries that have received support from the National Endowment for the Arts and other institutions. Maureen Gosling, with over four decades of documentary filmmaking, co-directed films with renowned documentarian Les Blank and produced “Blossoms of Fire,” which was broadcast on HBO Latino. Together, they created “This Ain’t No Mouse Music!”

About the Moderator – Brad Barber

Brad Barber, named on Variety’s “10 Documakers to Watch” list, is an Emmy-nominated filmmaker and a professor of documentary film at BYU. His feature debut, “Peace Officer,” won the Grand Jury and Audience Awards at the SXSW Film Festival and was nationally broadcast on PBS’s “Independent Lens.”
