HARTT2HARTT 4 PARENTS: Unveiling the truth about coping skills

By Hilary with HARTT Coaching - | Apr 17, 2024

Greetings, Fairview readers! I’m Hilary, a certified mental health coach residing in our community. I’m thrilled to introduce a weekly column aimed at offering insights and tips for enhancing mental well-being, both for parents and kids alike.

In my practice, I often encounter individuals expressing the belief that they lack coping skills. However, the reality is quite different. Each one of us possesses coping mechanisms, but the challenge lies in identifying those that are truly beneficial for our mental health.

Embracing healthy coping skills can empower both you and your children to navigate life’s challenges with resilience, overcome obstacles, and lead happier, more fulfilling lives.

So, how can you cultivate healthy coping mechanisms? Let’s delve into it:

Ask About it: Engage in open conversations with your loved ones about their feelings and experiences. Encourage them to reflect on what strategies might help alleviate stress or sadness. Prompt questions like, “What do you think might ease your stress right now?” or “What activities bring you comfort when you’re feeling down?”

Name it: Acknowledge and validate the effective coping strategies your children demonstrate. Offer praise and recognition when you observe them utilizing positive coping mechanisms. For instance, you might say, “I admire how you recognize the importance of taking a break when you’re upset” or “I noticed how engaging in physical activity helped you feel more relaxed before your event.”

Model it: Lead by example by openly sharing your own coping strategies with your children. Demonstrate healthy behaviors and self-care practices that promote emotional well-being. For instance, you might say, “I’ve had a challenging day, so I’m going to take a walk and unwind with a warm bath before preparing dinner.”

Parenting is undoubtedly a challenging journey, but remember, you’re not alone. We’re here to support you every step of the way! For additional tips and insights, consider subscribing to my weekly newsletter at www.bit.ly/weeklyhug.
