Snow College students selected as finalists in National EnergyTech UP Pitch event

By Staff | Apr 17, 2024

A group of students from Snow College is set to make waves on the national stage as they compete in the EnergyTech UP National Pitch Event in Austin, Texas, on April 15. Led by Professor Bryant Jones, the team was chosen as one of 28 finalists from a pool of 225 teams representing 117 schools across the country. Sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Technology Transitions, the competition challenges teams to identify high-potential energy technology, assess its market potential, and develop a comprehensive business plan for commercialization.

The selection of Snow College’s team for this prestigious event underscores the institution’s commitment to cutting-edge research and innovation. Under Professor Jones’s guidance, the team has been at the forefront of developing groundbreaking technology: the molten salt reactor. This innovative technology has the potential to revolutionize the energy industry, but progress in its development has been slow worldwide. Recognizing the need for accelerated development, Professor Jones and his team devised a novel approach using computer simulations to measure thermodynamic properties in salt compounds, significantly expediting the research process. Their venture, the “Computational Molten Salt Research Company,” offers consulting services to research firms by providing them with the essential thermodynamic data required for NRC approval, a process that typically takes years but can now be completed in a matter of months.

Expressing his enthusiasm for the team’s selection, Professor Jones remarked, “Our two-year school is conducting groundbreaking research and competing on a national level against universities. We are contributing to technology that has the potential to revolutionize the world.”
