Sleep In Heavenly Peace provides beds for kids

By Gloria Albrecht - The Pyramid | Dec 18, 2024

With many organizations providing clothing, food and toys to kids in need, one group has zeroed in on a need that was going unanswered. Sleep In Heavenly Peace is a nonprofit organization founded in Idaho in 2012. The group continues to grow with 350 chapters currently in the US and Puerto Rico, and now has local representation. Sleep in Heavenly Peace makes and delivers beds as well as the necessary bedding to go with it, to kids who are living without a bed of their own. These kids are sleeping on couches, mats or even the floor, sometimes without even a pillow. In Sanpete County alone 150 beds have been delivered to kids. Currently 5,266 kids are waiting for beds worldwide.

Sleep In Heavenly Peace has a small army of volunteers who learn how to build bunk beds for kids ages 3 to 17. The beds are built from scratch and are constructed to last a lifetime. Each bed is delivered to the kids’ home and assembled on site, complete with mattresses, pillows and bedding.

As with other nonprofits, the need for donations of time and money are vital to fulfilling the organization’s mission. SHP schedules events called “build days” where volunteers, both trained and inexperienced, build the bunk beds for local kids. All the tools and materials are donated by sponsors and supplied by SHP at the build site. Veteran builders are there on site to assist in the construction of beds and volunteers learn valuable skills while building these beds with easy-to-follow designs, assisted by the experienced builders. No woodworking experience is necessary to volunteer for a “build day.” Currently SHP needs a team for local deliveries, hopefully with their own pick up truck or small trailer. Beds are delivered to the homes of the kiddos in need by volunteers who assemble the beds on site and make the beds with mattresses, fresh sheets, pillows and blankets.

You can apply for a free bed by contacting Sleep In Heavenly Peace at https://shpbeds.org/apply or contacting them at 844-432-2337 ex. 5309.
