Remaining 2024 deer and elk permits to be sold starting July 9

By Staff | Jun 26, 2024

If you didn't draw a buck deer or bull elk permit during the hunt drawing earlier this year — and you're still interested in hunting deer or elk this fall — your last chance to obtain a permit begins in a few weeks.

SALT LAKE CITY — For hunters who didn’t secure a buck deer or bull elk permit during the earlier hunt drawing, a final opportunity is approaching. Beginning on July 9, remaining permits will be available on a first-come, first-served basis, provided the buyer has a valid hunting or combination license.

Elk permits

The sale of elk permits is scheduled as follows:

General-season archery elk permits: Available from 8 a.m. on Tuesday, July 9. These permits are unlimited.

Youth general-season elk permits: Available from 8 a.m. on Tuesday, July 9. These permits are also unlimited and allow youth (17 years or younger on July 31) to hunt in all general-season elk hunts using the appropriate weapon for each season.

General-season any bull elk permits (adults): Available from 8 a.m. on Thursday, July 11. The early-season hunt runs from Oct. 5-11 with 15,000 permits, while the late-season hunt from Oct. 12-18 has unlimited permits. The general muzzleloader hunt runs from Oct. 30 to Nov. 7 and is included in the 15,000 permit total.

General-season spike bull elk permits: Available from 8 a.m. on Thursday, July 18 for various hunts. There are a total of 15,000 permits available, with a cap of 4,500 on multi-season spike bull elk permits.

Deer permits

Deer permit sales include:

General-season buck deer permits: Available from 8 a.m. on Tuesday, July 9. There are 700 permits remaining after the big game drawing.

Youth general-season archery deer permits: Available from 8 a.m. on Tuesday, July 9. These permits are set aside specifically for youth hunters each year.

Limited-entry buck deer permits: Available from 8 a.m. on Tuesday, July 9. There are 15 permits remaining.

Bison permits

Over-the-counter bison permits: Available from 8 a.m. on Tuesday, July 9 for the Nine Mile hunting unit. These permits are unlimited, but hunters must complete an online orientation course before purchasing. The season runs from Aug. 1 to Jan. 31, 2025.

Purchasing permits

Permits can be purchased online, at a Division of Wildlife Resources office, or from any license agent. Buyers should check the hours of their nearest agent before traveling. A virtual waiting room will manage the high volume of online buyers, and refreshing or navigating away from the queue page may result in losing one’s place in line.

“If you happened to miss the big game drawing or were unsuccessful, this is your last opportunity for a chance to hunt big game in Utah this fall,” said DWR Wildlife Licensing Coordinator Lindy Varney. “Don’t forget that you can mentor a youth during these hunts, making it a great opportunity to pass on your love of the outdoors to the next generation.”

For more details on the permits, including specific hunting units and availability, visit the DWR website. It is recommended to review the 2024 Utah Big Game Field Regulations Guidebook before planning your hunt.

Make sure to mark your calendars and prepare early, as these permits are expected to go quickly. This could be your last chance to enjoy a big game hunt in Utah this fall.

Starting at $4.32/week.
