The Bulldog Benefit Concert is set to return to Gunnison's historic Casino Star Theatre, featuring the Gunnison Valley High School Orchestra and Snow College Chamber Orchestra. This music program fundraiser, scheduled for Thursday, March 21st at 7 pm, will be conducted by Dr. Brent Smith and Lisa Kaye Johnson.

GUNNISON — The iconic Casino Star Theatre in Gunnison will resonate with the sublime notes of unity as the Gunnison Valley High School Orchestra and Snow College Chamber Orchestra join forces for the Bulldog Benefit Concert on March 21 at 7 p.m. This enchanting evening, conducted by Brent Smith and Lisa Kaye Johnson, promises a diverse selection of works for string orchestra, all in support of the GVHS music programs.

A musical collaboration for a cause

Returning for its third installment, the Bulldog Benefit Concert is a testament to the power of musical collaboration and community support. Scheduled for Thursday, March 21, the concert will be a culmination of talent, dedication, and the shared love for music.

The Snow College Chamber Orchestra, an ensemble of exceptional string students, brings a legacy of musical excellence to the stage. Led by Smith, celebrating his 20th year as the director of orchestras and strings at Snow College, the orchestra has performed alongside renowned artists, showcasing their commitment to a professional and diverse musical experience.

Gunnison Valley High School’s String Orchestra, founded in 2008, has grown both in numbers and skill. Under the direction of Johnson, a foundational figure in Gunnison’s string orchestra program, the ensemble has consistently showcased their talent at state-level competitions. This collaborative performance is particularly poignant for this year’s seniors, who have been a part of the orchestra since its inception.

A night of melody and meaning

The concert promises an evening filled with enchanting melodies and harmonies, weaving together the talents of both institutions. The collaboration not only fosters musical growth but also strengthens the bonds between the schools and the community.

Tickets for this fundraising concert are available at the door, with a suggested donation of $5 per ticket. All proceeds will directly contribute to supporting the GVHS music programs, ensuring that the gift of music continues to enrich the lives of students.

Preserving history, enriching community

The historic Casino Star Theatre, a cornerstone of entertainment in Gunnison Valley since 1913, provides a fitting backdrop for this musical celebration. As a non-profit organization, the Casino Star Theatre Foundation is dedicated to preserving the building’s historical significance while enriching the local community with top-tier arts and entertainment.

The support of local partners, including Roland and Julia Christensen, The Miner Foundation, and others, has been instrumental in the success of the live performance season at Casino Star Theatre. Their commitment ensures that the arts thrive, providing a cultural haven for residents and visitors alike.

The Bulldog Benefit Concert marks a harmonious collaboration, embodying the spirit of community, music, and shared aspirations. As the live season concludes, the Casino Star Theatre invites everyone to a free concert featuring the Celtic music group “Shanahy” on April 25, offering a captivating end to a season of cultural richness. Join us in celebrating the arts and the vibrant community that makes it all possible.
